Day 3 Recap: Pool stages decided as Houghton, Chen, Appleton and Dunne progress

On day 3 the pool stage was decided as the last round of games in both the men’s and women’s draw were played.

The 3rd day of week 8 kicked off with a cracking game from men’s pool B as Oscar Weightman ensure he finished second in the pool. The 7-6(8), 7-5 win was as close as the scoreline suggests and Weightman was fired up throughout. At the same time, debutant Derrick Chen topped his pool with an authoritative straight set victory over Llewelyn Bevan. Chen has already impressed in the pool stage and will go through to the quarter-finals with plenty of confidence.

Three of the strong favourites for the women’s draw played today. Emily Appleton, three-time week winner this year, managed to warm up from a slow start to walk away with three points in her match against Amy Leather, including a perfect game of aces. (Below)

The other two favourites Katy Dunne and Katie Stresnakova but had straightforward days, albeit Stresnakova had to play her match. Katy Dunne walked away with a forfeit win after Maddie Brooks failed a medical exam earlier in the day. She tops her group although quite possibly she would have preferred to build her match fitness up with the extra game as she returns from injury. Stresnakova did not take long to dispatch of Freya Davies 6-1, 6-1. Davies will still qualify for the quarter-finals thanks to her win over Tiffany William.
