From UK Pro League 2020 Champion to US Open Glory: the remarkable rise of Emma Raducanu

Just over a year ago, a 17-year-old Emma Raducanu was crowned the inaugarual winner of the UK Pro League. Over 42 days of elite British Tennis, Raducanu, alongside Liam Broady, won the Golden Pinapple trophy at St George’s tennis club.


A year later and the breathtaking journey of Raducanu has gone up to a whole new level as she won the US Open. Here are just a few of the remarkable statistics from her triumph.

  • Raducanu becomes the first British Women to win a Major in 44 years
  • She becomes the first qualifier to win a major title
  • The 18-year-old only made her WTA debut in June
  • Playing in only her second ever Grand Slam
  • She becomes the youngest Brit to win a major
  • The first women to win a major without dropping a set since Serena Williams in 2014
  • Her new WTA ranking is 23 and she becomes British No.1

Her career has been catapulted to a extraordinary level in the past year, showcasing the ability of the UK Pro League to develop top-level British tennis players. In New York, a captivating final against Leylah Fernandez, a fellow teenager, ended 6-4, 6-3. Raducanu finished the match off in brilliant style with a wide ace. She collapsed to the ground before taking in the adulation of Flushing Meadows crowd, all whilst beaming with her trademark smile.
