Wins for John-Baptiste and Cox set up thrilling finale to Week 8 of UK Pro League

Lauryn John-Baptiste caused another stunning upset as she toppled league leader Emily Appleton in a nail-biting tiebreak to advance to the Week 8 final of the UK Pro League.  Battling it out at Aldershot Tennis Centre, John-Baptiste surged to a first set 6-1 lead before Appleton showed her class to take the second 7-5 and force a tie-breaker.

John-Baptiste eventually secured the remarkable victory, however, winning a thrilling breaker 13-11 to advance to Sunday’s showpiece and secure the chance to triumph in her first UK Pro League final.

Appleton had entered the penultimate qualifying round with 94 points and four wins but will have to settle for the third-fourth place play-off. While John-Baptiste, who knocked out eighth-place Katarina Stresnakova in the previous round, could quadruple her points, having previously only picked up a haul of six.

In the other women’s semi-final, Katy Dunne dominated Nadia Rawson to also advance to her first UK Pro League final of the season.

Rawson had headed into the match having started the week in seventh place, but was outclassed by Dunne who won 10 games in a row and emerged the victor 6-0 6-2.

In the men’s draw, Dan Cox continued his march to the top spot of the rankings with a comfortable victory over debutant Vijay Prashanth, coming through 6-2 6-1.

Cox has already guaranteed himself second place by making the final – the 15 points for the runner-up will see him move from fifth to second – while victory in the showpiece would see him reach the top spot with one week of qualifying remaining.

He will face George Houghton who beat Scott Duncan 6-3 7-6 (3) in the other semi-final, with Houghton set to move up to fifth even if he doesn’t win Sunday’s final and therefore guaranteeing him a spot in Finals Week.
